The Doctor's Review of Pretty Sammy OVA 1

Music [9/10]: The music, at least the opening theme, was very catchy and I found myself humming it long after the movie had ended. I could have lived without the karaoke... but it wasn't that horrible.

Plot [7/10]: The plot was actually pretty good for another Tenchi spinoff. Sammy is Tenchi's sister who helps out their mom with a music store they own. She is chosen by the soon-to-be ruler of the magical realm to become a Magical Girl called Pretty Sammy. She is given Ryoohki a small cabbit who is sent to help her understand her new powers. But, a rival for the magical kingdom's throne creates her own Magical Girl, Pixie Misa, to cause trouble for Pretty Sammy. If that isn't enough you still have to deal with Ryoko and Ayeka who are constantly fighting over Tenchi. Blah.. If you just ignore that part of it, its actually a pretty entertaining show.

Characters [8/10]: The characters were really pretty well developed. Poor Sammy got embarrassed by what she had to wear as a magical girl, Ryoko was a pervert, and Tenchi cared for both girls but he couldn't decide between them. I didn't like how Washu was just thrown in at the last minute, but I find her dub voice grating on the nerves anyway so I didn't really mind that she did not get to do too much.

Animation [9/10]: The animation style was really well done for an older anime. Pretty Sammy was so cute, just as all magical girls should be. The characters were all very well drawn. The monsters... were not so good, but they were only around for a little while, so it doesn't really matter.

Likability [9/10]: I did really enjoy this movie, I recommend others to watch it. Pretty Sammy is a typical Magical Girl anime, so anyone who likes that style should like this movie. The whole Tenchi/Ryoko/Ayeka love triangle thing really grates on the nerves, but it is worth it to see Sammy.

Sailor X's Review of Pretty Sammy OVA 1

Music [ 9/10]: I found both the opening and the ending enjoyable. The opening is definately the better song out of the two but they both worked nicely. There's nothing I'd really complain about in the music department.

Plot [8/10]: In the first part of the OVA we learn about Sasami and how Tenchi is now her brother. They both help out their mother who owns a cd store and is an aspiring singer. While this is going on, in a distant magical kingdom Tsunami and Ramia are candidates to become the next Queen. As part of her test Tsunami must choose someone to become a magical girl and ultimately decides on Sasami. Ryo-oh-ki is sent to help guide her. Ramia, obviously furious that Tsunami is the favored candidate, creates her own magical girl by the name of Pixie Misa to get in Pretty Sammy's way. To make matters worse Pixie Misa is actually Sasami's best friend Misao. I liked the new twist to older characters.

Characters [8/10]: Most of the characters in Pretty Sammy are likable. The most annoying moments in the OVA come from Ryoko. Although the whole Ayeka-Ryoko-Tenchi love triangle can be pretty tiresome Ryoko just goes too far. My favorite characters in this storyline are Sasami, Tsunami, Ryo-oh-ki, Misao, Rumia, Ramia, and Pixie Misa.

Animation [9/10]: I can't complain about the animation.

Likability [9/10]: I liked the Ova. Sasami is such an adorable character it's hard not to watch it just for her (and Pixie Misa)! The themes are catchy and it was nice to see Tsunami on screen. I would definately reccommend this for other Magical Girl fans but there is some inappropriate material in it courtesy of Ryoko, Ayeka, and Tenchi. So just try and ignore it @__@;.
